Abstract Submission Deadline 19 November 2023
Manuscript Submission Deadline 16 March 2024

The UN International Day for Biological Diversity takes place on the 22nd of May, to increase the understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The theme for 2023 is "From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity" in support of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Forest biological diversity refers to all life forms found within forested areas and the ecological roles they perform, including the plants, animals, and microorganisms that inhabit these areas. Forests are among the richest biological areas on our planet, providing essential services such as food security, employment, and livelihoods for millions of people. Additionally, biodiversity plays a huge role in building resilience to the impacts of climate change.

The negative impact of human activities such as deforestation, fragmentation and degradation has already resulted in a significant reduction of biodiversity in forests. Unfortunately, this trend is likely to continue, compromising sustainable development, and posing risks to human health. The situation calls for immediate action to safeguard forests. Conservation, restoration, and sustainable use are key to curbing deforestation and protecting global forests for future generations.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was finalized and adopted by governments in December 2022, with the aim of halting and reversing biodiversity loss and promoting the recovery of nature by 2030, for the benefit of people and the planet. The theme of this year's UN International Day for Biological Diversity reflects the achievement of COP 15 while highlighting the urgency of what still needs to be done in terms of implementation. Adequate means of implementation, such as financial resources, as well as planning, monitoring, reporting and review, are crucial to ensure progress is made.

It is in this spirit that Frontiers is launching a new article collection to coincide with this UN day. This occasion not only offers an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of protecting biological diversity in forests, but also the importance of strong implementation measures to ensure global biodiversity targets are met.

This Frontiers in Forests and Global Change Research Topic aims to address the role forest biodiversity plays in maintaining the health and well-being of the planet. Topics may include, but are by no means limited to:

- Importance of forest biological diversity for ecosystem health and resilience
- The potential of forest restoration to enhance biodiversity
- Contribution of forest biodiversity to climate change mitigation and adaptation
- Benefits of forest biodiversity for human societies
- Use of technology and innovative approaches to monitor and manage forest biodiversity
- Policy and governance frameworks needed to support effective forest biodiversity conservation and restoration

Keywords: UN Day, Forests, Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services, Livelihoods, Sustainability, Climate Change, Implementation, Restoration, Forest Monitoring
